When an ordinary computer user opens a folder on their operating system, they will be met with an abundance of file formats that they may be used to dealing with. But sometimes, there is a chance that the user will encounter a file extension or format that they would not ordinarily see. Most times, the average computer user will not see these file extensions, as the software manufacturers and even the creators of the operating system itself will take steps in hiding these file extensions from view. This is done as a precaution against computer users who may otherwise tamper or accidentally delete these files.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.
David G.
My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

Some of these files are absolutely critical to the program in question or in other cases, the operating system itself, and modifying or deleting these files may cause the program or operating system to malfunction unexpectedly or cease to function at all. However, there is still a chance that the average computer user will still run into these file formats while undergoing other important tasks such as removing unwanted files from their hard drive or uninstalling old and unused programs from their computer. Installing a new program will sometimes introduce new file extensions that the average user may not recognize.

More Info Regarding File Extension dat
The dat file extension is one of several file extensions that the average user may not ordinarily encounter while using a computer. The dat file is used by such a vast variety of programs and applications that keeping track of them all would be a rather fruitless endeavor. The dat file extension itself is a generic data file that is created by a specific application. These data files may contain data pertaining to the operations of that specific program. The data contained inside of a dat file may be in text or binary format. Most dat files are text based and can be viewed by opening a text editor such as Microsoft Windows' Notepad software. As mentioned before, a vast multitude of programs which run on the Microsoft Windows operating system use the dat file extension as a means of accessing stored information pertaining to that particular program. Locating the program that is responsible for a particular dat file can be troublesome, if not a futile task, since the only clues available are timestamps and possibly the folder location of the dat file itself. Because the vast majority of dat files are often times specific to the software or program that created it, there is little to no chance of another software or program opening another dat file that was meant for another program by accident.
The main issue when dealing with a dat file is the fact that it can be used as a vector for viruses and other malware to infiltrate and infect an operating system. A foreign dat file that is not linked to any legitimate program may be imported into the operating system in a variety of methods by a virus, and attempts to remove such file may prove to be unsuccessful in the beginning. This is because the dat file is currently in use and therefore locked up by the operating system, causing it to be nearly impossible to delete at that moment. An anti-virus scanning software will detect such viruses, but will request that the operating system be restarted or placed into a “safe mode” before making another attempt at removal. In most cases, the offending dat file will be either quarantined or removed from the operating system during the boot-up phase or during “safe mode” operation. In the event that a virus infects a dat file that is an important part of the operating system's functionality, it is best to consult with a computer repair specialist about the possible course of actions that should be taken to solve this problem.
